If the polytune wasn't an option then I would run with the pitchblack advance, that is imo the best tuner Korg has made to date and they've made some damn good ones. But from a user application I couldn't bond with it. The turbo tuner on paper is the best of the lot and it is indeed a fantastic tuner. I tune better with the polytune because of how it responds to the way I tune and the information I see when I'm tuning. The line for me is more in user application then what's best on paper. The polytune 3 is my go to tuner after having owned the boss tu3, turbo tuner, and several pitchblack tuners. IMO the boss still is adequate to serve the needs of a lot of folks but in comparison to the polytunes and turbo tuners along with the current offerings from Korg they have been left wanting. The end game being that you could have strobe accuracy with the convenience of a pedal format. Peterson also got in the game with their pedal tuners. Over the last decade more focus has been put into tuner pedals from other makers ie the polytune and Turbo tuners. Peterson desktop strobes were always the go to for more precise applications but we're so expensive. I find that’s useful.īoss and Korg have been the industry standard for years and have served countless musician's needs for years on stage. And sometimes it shows me just the G, B, or D are out and it’s right. You can double check that string, but it’s always in tune if it shows just slightly flat. If it tells you it’s in tune it is, and if it tells you it’s in tune but with a slightly flat low E string, it is as well.
I wouldn’t use it to tune the guitar if it’s out - that’s not what it’s for, but just to check quickly if you’re still in tune. And I don’t find the polyphonic mode useless at all - it’s a good quick check to see if everything is still in tune. I end up using the strobe mode to adjust intonation but find the mode with the center line quicker and easier to use and see for everyday tuning. I like the Polytune 3 in all three modes. I really only liked the TU3S in strobe mode. I’ve used both and would be happy with either, but I like the Polytune 3 more.

The full size Boss TU3 doesn’t, but the TU3S - the little half size version - ONLY works this way. The Polytune can do this in the full-size model but the mini can’t. I don’t know the fretboard as thoroughly as I want to and always being able to see what note I’m playing when I’m doing single note runs is useful to me. As someone who hasn’t played out in years, I don’t need to silence my gear when I tune and I really like to always have the tuner working.
